The Bump

I haven't blogged about this yet - mostly b/c I didn't know what to say. But, we feel like it's time and want to be able to update you all as we have more news, so here goes....

You may or may not have noticed that Lia has a small bump on her forehead in between her eyebrows. Anyway, we have been watching it for some time now and have had an Ultrasound and then an MRI done to investigate. We saw a pediatric neurosurgeon, Dr. Boydston, to interpret the results of the MRI and here are the details....

It is a dermoid cyst which is common and can occur where the skull plates (fissures) come together. The doctor said that normally he sees them along the back of the head or the side and that one on the forehead (or midline) is less common. Thankfully, the MRI showed that the cyst has no intracranial connection and can be removed by a plastic surgeon. This will need to happen in the next few months because the cyst can continue to grow and we don't want it to impede her skull development.

In case you want to read a little more and are a WebMD junkie like me, here is a page that explains dermoid cysts in more detail. This is a term that is used for other things as well, so be careful if you search out more info... it can be misleading.

Also, here is a image from Lia's MRI. Not every baby gets an MRI in their baby book, but we have a whole CD of these pictures. It is really amazing b/c you can even see the teeth she will have in a few months.

I will continue to update the blog as we know more about the surgery, but in the meantime we are thankful for your prayers and support. We are so blessed by our happy healthy girl and visiting Children's Hospital of Atlanta several times now has affirmed what a miracle each baby is.
